3 Tips for Adjusting to Assisted Living

As we get older, we undoubtedly get wiser, yet like it or not, our bodies start to degrade. At some point, things that once came easily to us can start to become a challenge to do ourselves. As such, many families turn to assisted living to ensure their loved ones are looked after.

For independent seniors who are used to doing things on their own, the change can be jolting at first. However, with an open mind, not only can assisted living be a wonderful experience, but you may just find that it’s the best chapter of your life. Here are some of the best tips for making the adjustment to assisted living and embracing your new life.

Stay Open-Minded

There can be a lot of stigma attached to assisted living facilities. It’s easy to feel confused and possibly even abandoned. However, this is not the case. Most families turn to assisted living as an alternative to letting older loved ones potentially get injured or ill while living on their own.

Keep an open mind and try to look at the situation from a positive standpoint rather than a negative one. Millions of people are living in assisted living facilities happily. All change can be difficult at first. However, if you keep an open mind and consider the possibility that you could learn to love where you’re living, you’ll be much more likely to have a great experience!

Add Your Own Touch

One of the most challenging aspects of moving to assisted living is the change in your physical surroundings. If you’ve lived in the same house for decades, then moving somewhere entirely new can feel strange. It will take time to adjust to your new surroundings, but it helps to add your own personal touches.

Make your living space feel like home by injecting your own personality. By adding your own artwork, family photos, and memorabilia, you can start to create a space that doesn’t just remind you of your old home but creates a new one that feels safe and familiar.

Stay Social

One of the most positive aspects of assisted living is the sense of community. A common challenge that seniors face in their older years is feeling isolated. Since mobility can be an issue, many seniors find themselves stuck at home with a lack of social interaction. Embrace the experience and attend all of the social events at your assisted living facility.

Get to know the other residents and participate! You may be surprised to find that you have more in common with your neighbors than you realize. Not to mention, some of the activities in assisted living can be downright fun! Who doesn’t love a good bingo night or laughing at a great comedy?

By embracing these tips and staying patient with the process, you will adjust to your new living environment and enjoy this chapter of your life knowing you’re well looked after and cared for.
