A brutal attack, an impossible attraction, an evil mastermind & a mysterious tree with all the answers. – author @CarissaAndrews #Pendomus
CG – Introduce yourself to the captive audience that you now have before you. (As in tell us something NOT in your bio, give us a dirty little secret not having or having to do with your writing)
Well, hey there gang! My name is Carissa Andrews (duh!) and I love avocados. Wait, what’s that? This isn’t Avocado’s Annonymous? Drat. Well, in that case, I should take a different approach.
My name is Carissa Andrews and I’m a author who loves writerly endeavors. Seeing as you’re reading this blog, you probably already knew that. So let me tell you a bit about me as a person and my evolution through writing my book, Pendomus.
Pendomus came to me when I needed it most. I was in the midst of an extremely unhappy marriage and engaged with a family who would not (perhaps could not) support me for the person I am. Ultimately, when I got the courage to leave my ex after fifteen unhappy years, my own parents turned their backs on me to support him. Now, it’s at this time when you may ask yourself—why would they do that? Is this Carissa Andrews a nutter? Well, probably. But not in the completely insane kinda way. (So my therapist tells me.) I come from a long line of alcoholics, and unfortunately, both of my parents inherited the trait. As I grew up, I witnessed their destructive behaviors with alcoholism and smoking and vowed to never be that person. Ironically, this attitude lent me to being a white sheep in a black sheep family. Sometimes their behaviors have been emotionally destructive and that’s something I’ve had to work hard at letting go of.
So, as my previous marriage was crumbling, I found solace in my writing. Solace in talking to others who wrote and promoted their art. Never in a million years would I have considered or thought I would find my soul mate out on the internet. I wasn’t looking for love. Yet, love found and hunted this Minnesotan woman with a vengeance in the form of an amazing and handsome British man. We were both pimping our stories and looking for others of like mind on Twitter, of all places. Little did I know when we first met, how integral he would be in my life. Colin and I were married last year after a whirlwind courtship. Not only did he help me through the toughest period in my life, he has lifted me up and helped me continue on the path of being the best version of me that I can be.
CG – Is there a genre, other than the one you currently write in, that you wish you could break into? (If you want you can – I would love it if you did – a max flash fiction of no more that 500 with the photo prompt. Yep, you can turn it into something that has to do with our world, and it can be a short haiku or a 500 word peak into your world build… but try it out in a genre that is NOT in the YA Sci-Fi. Winter is coming here in Alaska and these are our nights, It is sci-fi-ish… play and have fun!(Yes this could work with romance, mystery, humour, textbooks on quantum physics.. own it, title it and GO!)
I would love to try all sorts of genres, actually. If I can take one genre and bend it around, that would be ideal. So in that realm, I’d love to do a historical/archaeological novel with a twist. Or a romance/erotica novel within a setting/era that could enhance it—rather than it being real world based. World building is fun for me, so if there’s a way to bust out of the norm and what already is … I would be happy to take it.
Both of them walked in silence along the frozen expanse. The lights in the distance still felt way too far to Elena, but the multicolored tendrils of the aurora borealis kept her trudging onward. They lit the way in a wistful dance, certainly more delighted in this night than she was.
“You can never tell anyone.” Hector breathed in her ear, breaking the unspoken promise not to mention what they had just done.
Elena glared and stepped through the ice crystals in her newly formed cloud of disgust. She didn’t dare utter a word, because she knew if she started, she would be unable to stop. And that would be most unfortunate for Hector.
For a moment, he chewed on Elena’s hint to remain silent, hating the ambiguity in this evening’s events. One thing was certain, Hector liked things clear and concise. There’s less room for error that way, less reason for punishment. He grunted in frustration, but fell a few feet behind, allowing her to take the lead in her precious peace and quiet.
The crunch of compacted snow beneath his worn out Adidas was quickly becoming an unbearable comparison in his mind to his mother’s fingernails down her dilapidated chalkboard. He hated that piece of shit. Hell, he hated his mother. With nothing else to focus on, the horrifying events from the evening played, one after the other, in a continual loop. He hated himself for what she’d turned him into. Worse yet, he hated what he allowed himself to become. If he couldn’t secure a promise from Elena, he’d settle for a goddamn shower to wash away the reek of blood and semen.
Hector glared at Elena’s auburn ponytail as it bobbed enthusiastically from side to side. A part of him delighted in the fantasy of winding his fingers around the perfectly placed stands and ripping it clear off her head. If he thought it would do any good, he may even have considered trying it. Instead, he bite his tongue until the metallic essence pooled in his mouth. He was such a fool for thinking things could be different with someone like her. For believing her promise of a better existence than the one he had grown up in. All women are the fucking same.
CG – When it comes to the genre you do write in, what are a few of the books or writers that have influenced you and your own writing (yes I can actually ask a serious question?)
Truthfully, I have really read more in the paranormal type genre. I love witches, unexplained phenomena, special powers, etc. When I first started writing Pendomus, I actually had no idea I was writing science fiction, if you can believe it! Pendomus has always had more of a paranormal/fantasty place in my heart, so when my beta-reader-extraordinaire told me I was writing sci-fi, I was like … “Wait, HUH?” So in the vein of the people who inspire me and influence me, the biggest is probably Joss Whedon and his style of storytelling. Yes, yes … he’s in TV and movies. But still! He’s pretty much as awesome as they get. I also have some other favorites that are more standard … J.K. Rowling, Stephenie Meyer, of course. Not to mention some of my good friends I’ve made as I started writing. People like Cassia Leo, Pavarti Tyler, and Kendall Grey to name a few.
CG – If you could cast one of your works, who would you choose to play your main characters? (Some have a huge cast, so say no more than five, I am thinking many would be able to do at least one, you do have one character right? Include photos of choice or I Can find them also – include photo credits or links where they are found)
Please forgive the cruditiy of my Photoshopping with the cast. I was on a time constraint and had too much coffee. You’ll understand, right? (CG – No problem, I hope it is OK I put them all in a collage! Photoshop medley of sorts… WAY cool!)
Runa as Molly Quinn
Runa has an air of innocence to her that not many actresses can pull off. Molly Quinn is one such actress. She can be strong, but has that gentle innocence I’m looking for.
Runa wants to say: “I don’t know how to do this—any of this. Live away from all I’ve been brought up with. I thought I was so brave before. I was such a fool. I’m ignorant, and it makes me vulnerable. Susceptible to all the horrible things in this world I’ve never even imagined. I only need to walk by the mirror to prove my point.”
Thomas Dekker – Traeton.
If I could pick anyone in the world, it would be Thomas Dekker. He has the look and feel, not to mention mannerisms I see in my head with Trae.
Trae wants to say: “I swear, the Helix want to zap all the natural cycles out of humanity. Make us nothing but robots, running around doing whatever the Helix deems acceptable, all the while we think we’re living and fulfilling some higher purpose. “
But real life, the unmanufactured kind, isn’t like that. Things are complicated and messy. People make no sense, and there are no clear answers. You have to stumble through, hoping you make it to the other side in one piece.
Fenton – Jamie Campbell Bower
Fenton’s the different one of the group. He stumbled on some old videos from Earth when he was younger and became fascinated with the English accent. (I swear to you, he had this accent waaaaay before I met my husband.) He began using it as a child and it grew with him and became a part of who he is. Fenton is also one of the techies in the group, so I need an actor who can talk the talk and walk the walk, like Jamie Campbell Bower.
Fenton has to say:
“Trae, ya can’t live life shielding yerself from everythin’ tha’s gonna bring ya pleasure in this world. You’re a good guy—a grea’ guy. But yer stupid.”
Kani – Jenna Ushkowitz
I will be the first to admit it, Kani is a bitch. She doesn’t like change. She’s suspicious of other women and she can kill you with those long tendrils of hair if she wanted to. I envision Kani to be oriental in appearance, sort of a nod to the idea of China’s population expansion and their upcoming role in the world. Jenna not only has the looks I’m going for, but she can play the role of B.I.T.C.H like nobody’s business.
Kani has to say:
“There are plenty of what-if scenarios I can think of as to why she’d be out in the woods. You’re kidding yourself if you think she couldn’t be one of them. They’re clever—you of all people should understand, Trae. With their mind control capabilities, they can be anyone, even pretty, dumb blonds. For all we know, she was playing up to see what idiot might come to her aid.” (Kani referencing Runa and her connection to possible bad-guys.)
CG – What is the first thing you would do if you woke up one morning to find one of your books on the NY Times Bestsellers List?
Ooooh … that one’s tough! I think once I’ve jumped up and down and freaked out in front of my husband, I would probably call my BFF (beta-reader-extraordinaire) and then pinch myself. If that didn’t wake me up, I’d make my husband pinch me, just to be sure. Then I would probably be a big nerd and celebrate on Twitter and Facebook with all the amazing people who have supported me and my writing. There might be champagne involved. A LOT of champagne. HA!
CG – Do you have any vices that you turn to while you are writing (as in what candy / snack food / drink / 80’s hair band you break out in song too when you just cannot figure out the next line to write and that bitch of a muse is off on her own hunt)?
My biggest vice is most definitely coffee. If I can’t get my groove on, you’ll find me at the local Caribou sipping the biggest damn campfire mocha I can find.
CG – During the zombie apocalypse, what fictional character would you want watching your back?
My first thought was someone who can fly, like Superman. Or get the hell outta Dodge, like Dr. Who. I mean, dang… that Tardis can go anywhere in space and time! But then I was like: What the hell am I thinking? If I gotta actually fight in the zombie apocalypse, there’s only fictional character I’d want covering my behind. Buffy! Yep. She knows how to kill the undead like nobody’s business.
CG – What do you do when you’re not writing? (ie: What festive things do you do for fun? What things do you do when you make yourself have fun, and what is on the top of your list to do when you actually take two days for you (and family)
When I’m not writing, I like doing crazy, fun adventures with the family. Get up at some ungodly hour, listen to the children moan and complain, then start driving just to see where you can end up in five hours—taking only roads you’ve never been on. If time a pain in the behind and I have only a few minutes to unwind (Did you like that rhyme?), I like to read, take hot bubble baths, go for walks, mow the lawn (yes, I actually like that!), meditate, or just chill with my husband and kids.
CG - FAST and FURIOUS – Don’t pause just answer what comes first to mind
- Glass, Plastic or straight from the bottle? Bottle. Is it a baby bottle? Oh god, am I doing it wrong?
- Coke or Pepsi or Orange Crush? Wild Cherry Pepsi FTW!
- Call a plumber or use the Duct tape? Can’t Duct tape fix everything?
- Paperback or E-Book? Both! No seriously, I would have both. Ask my overfilled shelves and jam packed Kindle!
- House of Mirrors or House of Horrors? Horror, baby. If I’m bound to be trapped in a house, at least give me something better to look at than myself! (Good thing my hubby’s not here to read this. Heehee!)
- Star Trek or Star Wars? Star Trek all the way! New Captian Kirk = AWESOME!
- Worm Hole, Warp Speed or the Tardis? Stargate! (What can I say, I’m a rebel!) HA! But then, my husband’s English, so Tardis is a close second.
- Snoopy, Scooby or Brian (From “The Family Guy”? Who the hell is Brian. Oh, I see, Family Guy. Huh, never seen it. Guess I go Scooby-dooby-DOO!
- Learn battle techniques by Ninjas, Pirates or Vikings? Ninjas, definitely ninjas. Unless being trained by Cap’n Jack. Then you always go with Cap’n Jack.
- Chainsaw Arm or Shotgun Leg? Erm. Ewwwww. Can I go with zombie friend with one or the other?

Meet the Author
Born and raised in central MN, Carissa Andrews has always loved books. She started her career at 15 in a bookstore, just to be able to afford her book fetish. By 19, she worked for a magazine publisher. At 22, she was working for printers to learn their trade. At 27, she went back to school for graphic design, and became an award winning designer. Little did she know all of her experiences would lead her to becoming a self-publishing power house.
At 31, a magical world on a planet far away, invaded her mind.
At 34, she’s learned what she needs to make her work successful.
Humanity has colonized on a tidally locked planet known as Pendomus, a planet of extremes. Half eternal scorching desert and half perpetual arctic night. Surviving along the temperate band between the two, we’ve set up home in a complex known as the Helix. Within the Helix lies a highly sophisticated, highly technological society functioning solely on humans fulfilling their life’s purpose. That purpose is determined and nurtured through a person’s natural aptitudes, as read by their daily brain scans. Eating, sleeping, even procreation is handled by professionals. These basic concepts, no longer a part of society’s every day norm.
Seventeen-year-old Runa Cophem longs to be more than part of the Helix machine. Her life inside is anything but fulfilling. She feels disconnected, and longs to be more than society dictates. Inside, no one socializes, no one interacts in a meaningful way. It’s never set right with Runa. She would love nothing more than to reach out to her family, but not even her own mother can show any semblance of love for her. Instead, Runa has found solace in the ancient woods nearby, despite being strictly forbidden.
Runa’s life takes an unforeseen turn when she’s brutally attacked, and left for dead in those woods near the Helix. Rescued by a stranger with blue hair, she’s immersed into a surprising way humanity has survived. Fueled by a yearning to belong, and an attraction she didn’t even know was possible, Runa wants desperately to make a new life. Yet, there’s much she doesn’t know about herself, about the planet and the forces controlling her from afar.
What she needs is some answers.
