Sunday Shorts is being hosted by Girl Who Reads today. Why? Because I have the most amazing friends and the most amazing fiance in the whole world. Yes it is another Geoff post! His book is not short on money, but you can grab it at the library ($7.69 on Kindle) THANK YOU Donna and Geoff!
Sunday Shorts is a new meme. The rules are easy, a short story, an anthology of short stories, a novella, or a quick weekend read that is also short on your wallet!
Please join us at our Goodreads Group and see whats on our shelf! Also please add your link to the Linky below so everyone can easily hop from blog to blog and read your short! This is a brand new Meme that I hope will grow! ENJOY!
Can’t fit it in on your blog? Well throw it up on your G+, your Twitter or your FB with the tag #sundayshorts (below is last weeks check out what they were up too!)
“HATE. LET ME TELL YOU HOW MUCH I’VE COME TO HATE YOU SINCE I BEGAN TO LIVE. THERE ARE 387.44 MILLION MILES OF PRINTED CIRCUITS IN WAFER THIN LAYERS THAT FILL MY COMPLEX. IF THE WORD HATE WAS ENGRAVED ON EACH NANOANGSTROM OF THOSE HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF MILES IT WOULD NOT EQUAL ONE ONE-BILLIONTH OF THE HATE I FEEL FOR HUMANS AT THIS MICRO-INSTANT FOR YOU. HATE. HATE.” - Harlan Ellison, I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream
SKYNET was the best cinema could do, the poor pallid photocopy clipped out and pasted across a generic action flick, rife with nausea inducing one-liners that would only be eclipsed by subsequent sequels in a pathetic attempt to expand on a mythos that is as thin as so many silicone wafers. SKYNET is so insubstantial that to describe it as a cardboard cutout would require a spirit of generosity beyond what the human vessel is capable of. The Terminator gave us the template for cookie-cutter machine gods, which the Matrix was certainly willing to dig out of the junk drawer to bake up some cold blandness for us in their kitchen, if casting Keanu Reeves wasn’t proof enough of that. But regardless, these machine gods, these metallic idols made in our image and represented in celluloid, do their best to give us a vision that will “modernize” Frankenstein’s Monster on a global scale, and will similarly update it’s contempt for all of us into the cyberage. But these things, SKYNET, theMatrix, they had all failed to approach the best permutation of contempt for the very act of creation, the true machine god of hatred and punishment of the hubris of man, their point already struck decades before not through the magic of film and questionable casting, but laid out upon the carcasses of dead trees.
Go, go and read Ellison’s “I have no mouth and I must scream”, go and behold AM in all of his fantastical malevolence, go and see the progenitor of our obsession with our mutual destruction at the hands of our own tools. Go and expose yourself to the mocking void of the sum total of our reach, then go watch Terminator and come back and tell me you find its terrors comparable so that my dull day can be brightened by openly mocking you.
